Student publications and journalists win Katie Awards

The TCU Daily Skiff and Image magazine recently won Student Katie Awards as top publications from the Press Club of Dallas, and nine of the publications’ reporters, photographers, designers and cartoonist won top awards as well. The winners were announced at the 48th Annual Katie Awards dinner at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dallas last month.

The Daily Skiff and Image won Best Student Newspaper and Best Student Magazine Print/Web.

The Daily Skiff student journalists honored include:
  •  Kim Tesarek, best student story, for her coverage of the immigration reform protest march in downtown Fort Worth in March.
  • Ashley Chapman and Brian Wooddell, Best General News Story, for the coverage of the fire in March that destroyed the TCU Bookstore.
  • Travis Stewart, Best Sports Story, for his coverage of the Horned Frogs victory over Iowa State University in the Dec. 31, 2005 Houston Bowl.
  • Andrew Chavez, Best Student Photography, for his photograph of the immigration reform protest.
  • Stephen Spillman, Best Student Photography, for his photograph of the TCU Bookstore blaze.
  • Brian Wooddell, Best Student Publication Design.
  • Kelsey Hasler, Best Student Publication Design.
  • Nicholas Sambaluk, Best Student Comic Strip.
The Image student journalists honored in the magazine print/web category included:
  • Ashley Moore, Best Student General News Story, for “The Silent Epidemic.
  • Christina Ruffini, Best student Feature Story, for “Evolution or Revolution.
  • Emily Goodson, Best Student Photographer, for her photograph of a 5- year old girl in the arms of her father, an Army soldier, at the dedication of TCU Veteran’s Plaza.
  • Steven Spillman, Best Student Photographer, for his photo of independent gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman at the Texas State Fair.
  • Brian Wooddell, Best Student Publication Design.

The Katie Awards are open to publications from Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Louisiana.
