The TCU Harris College of Nursing and Health Sciences hosted the third-annual Student Research Symposium on Thursday, April 27 at the University Recreation Center. Students in the schools of communication sciences and disorders, kinesiology, nurse anesthesia, nursing and social work discussed their research findings and presented posters describing their work.

“This was the largest Student Research Symposium so far and it has gotten better and better each time,” said Dennis Cheek, Harris College of Nursing professor and Symposium judge coordinator. “In addition, through resources from the TCU Vision in Action (VIA) funding, we were able to purchase display boards and increase the size of the symposium. The funding also allowed us to increase the size of the prizes in the various categories.”

Faculty volunteers for the Symposium included Buck Kelsey, nurse anesthesia, who chaired the committee; and committee members Meena Shah, kinesiology; Dennis Cheek and Lavonne Adams, nursing; William Ryan, communication sciences and disorders; and Alan Detlaff, social work. Judges included Barb Brown, nurse anesthesia; Lavonne Adams, nursing, Melody Phillips, kinesiology; and Helen Morrison, communication sciences and disorders.

A total of 32 posters were submitted, including 13 undergraduate and 19 graduate posters. Undergraduate presentations were based on new research findings or research in progress and graduate presentations were divided into two categories - new research findings or the area of translational research. Awards were presented for the top undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of both original and translational research.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity for students to exhibit their involvement in research either individually or with faculty. The presentation of work in a poster format is a comfortable way for students to share face-to-face findings and experiences in the research process,” said Suzy Lockwood, TCU nursing professor and president, Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Society, Beta Alpha chapter.
