Harris College hosted Student Research Symposium

Graduate and undergraduate students in the Harris College of Nursing & Health Sciences presented their research at the 7th Annual Student Research Symposium in April.

“The Harris College Research Symposium provides students the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and self-confidence in conducting and presenting their research in a professional venue,” said Dr. Debbie Rhea, associate dean of research in Harris College and symposium chair. “This will increase their preparedness for graduate school and professional employment.”

Presentations were based on new research findings, translational research or research in progress. Presentations by 65 students provided new data or information pertaining to disciplines or clinical practice within the college.

Winners at the undergraduate level included:
  • Kate Lunati (nursing) – “A survey of women in rural Ghana about cervical cancer and HPV awareness”
  • Heather Brown (social work) – “Emergency preparedness of undergrad students at TCU”
  • Holli Hutto (social work) – “Survivors of sexual abuse and animal assisted therapy: The impact of anxiety in therapy”
Winners at the graduate level included:
  • Tricia Butner (doctor of nursing practice) – “Use of a guideline to diagnose and treat vitamin D deficiency”
  • Sarah Goss (nurse anesthesia) – “The effects of laboratory simulation on salivary cortisol levels in CRNAS students”
  • Kelyn Rola (kinesiology) – “The effects of heat acclimation on heat shock protein and lymphocyte apoptosis”
