Career Center prepares students for current employment environment

Fort Worth, TX

12/8/2008

As the country moves on in economic uncertainty, students continue to graduate and must be prepared to face the harsh employment environment. The TCU Career Center helps prepare its students.

According to the Center, it continues to encourage students to seek assistance in developing resumes and cover letters.  The Center offers opportunities to improve interview skills through mock interviews. In addition to face-to-face meetings, the Center offers a program to assist students in preparing resumes and cover letters and is available 24 hours a day.  Additionally, with a webcam, students can participate in a mock interview any time they choose.

TCU Career Center works with companies that are downsizing or not hiring full-time employees and encourages them to hire interns to maintain their strategic efforts.  The Center assists companies in establishing meaningful internship programs and seeks opportunities that will provide internships as well as volunteer and part-time positions, which students may then leverage into full-time opportunities.

The Center has acquired resources that are used to target companies as potential employers for TCU students.  Partnership has become the operative word.  It continues to partner with those companies that have been longtime employers for TCU students, as well as developing partnerships with companies that will offer the best opportunities for employment. The Center is seeking partnerships with local chambers of commerce to supply students employment opportunities with chamber members.  The resources the Center uses provide company lists in at least 30 industry categories in over 30 major metropolitan areas around the US.

In summary, TCU Career Services is proactive in this time of economic and employment uncertainty by:

1. Preparing students to be competitive in the job market by showcasing their skills
2. Seeking internship, volunteer and part-time opportunities with area companies
3. Partnering with companies that are recurrent recruiters on campus by making it less costly to recruit and seeking new partners with companies in industries that are continuing to grow.
